Credit cards in South Africa offer a range of rewards (points or cashback) on everyday spending. The Top 5 reward/cashback cards (ranked below) were selected based on generous earn rates, useful perks, and reasonable fees in recent 2026 data. All five offer competitive signup perks (if any), ongoing rewards on purchases, travel insurance and lounge access, and streamlined digital services. We compared them on annual fees, signup bonuses, reward rates (cashback % or points/R), reward caps, foreign transaction fees, and key perks. We also estimate a typical user’s net annual benefit under assumed spend patterns.
Top 5 Cards:
- Capitec Credit Card (Capitec Bank) – 1% cashback on all spend, low fees (R100 initiation; R50 pm) and global lounge access.
- Discovery Bank Platinum Credit Card – Vitality Rewards up to 15–25% back depending on Vitality Money status, with R180 monthly bundled fee (incl. Vitality).
- Absa Gold Credit Card – Cashback via Absa Rewards up to 30% at partners, with only R69 pm fee and entry-level income.
- FNB Gold Credit Card (eBucks) – eBucks reward points (≈1–2% back) plus 15% fuel cashback, R275 pm fee (approx.), and broad eBucks program perks.
- Standard Bank Platinum Credit Card – UCount Rewards points (≈2 points/R, ~2%) on all spend, plus bonus fuel points, free ATM withdrawals (2x monthly), fee in range R90–130 pm.
These cards serve different needs (see “How to Choose” flowchart below). All allow 55 days interest-free if paid in full, and provide robust travel benefits (insurance, lounge passes) for frequent travelers. They also support digital features like app controls and virtual cards.
In this article, we first explain how card rewards work, then outline our evaluation criteria, present a detailed comparison of the Top 5 cards, and finally guide you to pick the best card for your profile. We end with a clear call-to-action to apply (with affiliate links).

How Credit Card Rewards Work
Credit card rewards convert your spending into either points/miles or cashback. South African banks typically reward cardholders via:

- Cashback: A percentage of your spend is returned as cash into your account or savings. Example: Capitec pays 1% cash back on all spend, credited monthly.
- Rewards points: You earn points (eBucks, UCount, Greenbacks, Discovery Miles, etc.) per rand spent. These can be redeemed as statement credit, vouchers, or cash. Points often have fixed R:point value (e.g. 1 eBuck ≈ R0.01).
- Tiered bonuses: Some programs boost your rate if you reach a reward tier (e.g. Absa’s up to 30% at partner stores, Standard Bank’s UCount gives bonus fuel points).
- Category bonuses: Higher rates at certain merchants (fuel, groceries, airtime). E.g. FNB gives up to 15% back on fuel and airtime via eBucks; Absa Rewards gives up to 30% back on groceries or fuel at partners.
- Points expiry: Earned rewards often expire if unused (commonly 1–5 years) or if card is closed. E.g. Standard Bank UCount points expire after 3 years if not used; Discovery Miles typically expire 2 years after issuance.
- Transfer partners: Most SA credit rewards are local and not transferable to airlines/miles. (A few premium cards may allow converting points to airline miles, but this is rare.)
- Foreign spend & fees: Foreign transactions usually incur a forex fee (e.g. 2–3%). For example, Discovery Bank charges 2% international purchase fee. Capitec advertises “Tap for free anywhere in the world” (no FX fee). Always check the foreign transaction fee, as 2–3% is common unless using a dedicated forex account.
In summary, rewards are earned on qualifying purchases (swipes, taps) and credited as cash or points. High-tier cards and loyalty programs may offer extra multipliers. Always read the fine print for caps (e.g. monthly max spend that earns rewards) and any minimum spend to qualify each month.
Evaluation Criteria
We scored each card on these criteria:
- Annual fee: Ongoing cost (monthly/annual). Lower is better, but premium cards may justify higher fees with rewards. E.g., Capitec’s credit card costs R50/m (R600/yr) plus R100 initiation, which is very low. Standard Bank fees range R40–290/m depending on tier.
- Signup bonus: One-time bonus (points or cash) for new applicants. Most SA cards don’t offer large signups, but some may have promotional cash rebates or bonus points for a limited time.
- Ongoing rewards rate: Actual cashback % or points earned per rand. We compare base rates and any category bonuses. (E.g., Capitec is flat 1%; Standard Bank Platinum offers ~2 points/R ~2% base.)
- Reward caps/limits: Many programs cap how much reward-earning spend applies per month. For instance, Discovery Bank limits dynamic Vitality rewards to R979/m for Gold (and up to R479 for PAYT accounts). Absa Rewards has a monthly cap beyond which no further cashback is earned.
- Foreign transaction fee: % fee on overseas or foreign currency spend. Ideally low (or 0%). Capitec has none; Discovery Bank charges 2% (with a R500 cap per txn).
- Interest rates: (Nominal APR on unpaid balance.) We note if cards offer below-maximum rates. Capitec’s card is “prime +” (low). Standard Bank can go as low as prime–0.25% if you qualify. Lower is better for revolving balances.
- Eligibility requirements: Minimum income and age. (E.g. Capitec card needs ≥R3,000/m salary; Absa Gold: R7k/m; Standard Platinum: ~R15k/m; see official sites.)
- Welcome offers: Any extra perks for new customers (e.g. extra lounge visits).
- Insurance & benefits: Travel insurance (e.g. Capitec: free travel cover up to R5m), purchase insurance, etc. Free lounge visits (e.g. Capitec, Discovery, Standard Platinum include lounge access).
- Customer service & digital features: Quality of app, contactless/tap, ability to add virtual cards. All Top 5 have robust apps (Capitec app is highly rated, Discovery Bank app is lauded for features).
We emphasize net value: the annual rewards minus fees. High rewards rates only matter if you actually spend on the card. We estimate sample annual value in our table based on assumed spend profiles (conservative, average, high) to illustrate relative value.

* Estimated Annual Net Value assumes R200,000 yearly spend (diverse categories) with responsible repayment. Actual value depends on your spend mix and reward tier. Net value = rewards – fees. Capitec’s 1% on R200k = R2,000 net (R2,000–R600 fees). FNB and Standard values assume category usage (fuel, groceries) for bonus rewards. (See sources for detailed terms.)

- Frequent Traveller: Consider Discovery Platinum or Standard Platinum for lounge access, high foreign spend benefits, and dynamic rewards on travel. Discovery’s Vitality rewards can give up to 25% back on travel if you maintain high Vitality Money status.
- Groceries & Fuel Shopper: Absa Gold or Standard Platinum shine here. Absa’s up to 30% cashback at partner supermarkets and fuel stations; Standard’s UCount gives boosted points on groceries/fuel, plus fuel limits (R15/l back).
- Online Shopper / Streaming: Absa’s digital partners (Netflix, PlayStation, etc.) offer high cashback. Discovery clients can use Vitality benefits (75% back on HealthyFood items).
- Low-Fee/Cashback Seeker: Capitec Credit Card (1% flat) is best if you want simple cashback with minimal fees. FNB Low-Fee cards (e.g. EasyPlan) do exist, but their rewards are low.
- Student/Starter: Absa’s Student card (R0 fee) or Standard Bank Classic (low fee) allow building credit and entering reward programs.
Also consider eligibility (income/age) – e.g., Capitec needs only R3k/m, Absa Gold R7k, while premium cards require higher income. Finally, factor in benefits like travel insurance and ATM fees.
Sample Annual Value by Spending Profile
| Spend Profile | Monthly Spend Mix (rand) | Capitec (1%) | Discovery Platinum (≈15%) | Absa Gold (base+partners) | FNB Gold (≈1.5%) | Standard Platinum (≈2%) |

Assumptions: “Discovery Platinum” values assume a 15% effective Vitality Miles back (actual depends on status; could reach 25%). Absa’s assumes 5% base + occasional 30% partner spend. FNB Gold ~1.5% overall (with fuel bonus), Standard Platinum ~2% on all spend. Actual returns vary. Fees deducted yields “net value.” This illustration highlights how high spend and category focus can amplify reward differences.
